There is no single qualification that somebody must hold to work as an energy manager in the UK, and energy management is not a statutory regulated occupation. Employers can therefore set their own education, experience and professional requirements.
Energy managers often have experience in areas such as engineering, building services, facilities management, sustainability, energy consultancy or environmental management. Technical knowledge is important because the role can involve analysing energy consumption, conducting energy assessments, evaluating projects and developing energy and decarbonisation strategies.
Professional training is also available. The Energy Institute offers qualifications ranging from its Certificate in Energy Management Essentials through to advanced energy management training, as well as Chartered Energy Manager status for experienced professionals.
