An ESOS Lead Assessor is a qualified professional who is listed on an approved ESOS Lead Assessor register.
Their main role is to review an organisation’s ESOS assessment and evidence pack and confirm whether they consider it to meet the ESOS requirements. Lead Assessors can also carry out energy audits themselves or review work completed by other specialists.
Their review can include the organisation’s total energy consumption calculation, the areas of significant energy consumption, the compliance routes used, site sampling, energy intensity ratios and the energy-saving opportunities identified.
A Lead Assessor can be an appropriately qualified employee of the organisation or an external consultant. If the Lead Assessor is an employee of the participant, two directors must sign off the ESOS assessment and notification of compliance. Where an external Lead Assessor is used, one director is normally required to sign off.
The organisation remains legally responsible for ESOS compliance. Appointing a Lead Assessor does not transfer responsibility for the accuracy of the assessment or the information submitted.
