What does a carbon manager do?

A carbon manager helps an organisation understand and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the size and type of organisation, but typically involve carbon accounting, reduction planning and reporting.

A carbon manager may collect data on electricity, gas, fuels, transport, waste and purchased goods and use it to calculate emissions in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This helps identify the largest sources of emissions and where practical reductions could be made.

They may also set carbon reduction targets, develop and assess reduction projects, track progress and prepare emissions reports. Carbon managers often work with energy, facilities, procurement, transport and sustainability teams because emissions can arise across different parts of an organisation and its supply chain.
