What are 5 ways to reduce your carbon footprint?

Five practical ways for businesses to reduce their carbon footprint include using less energy, improving the efficiency of buildings and equipment, switching to lower-carbon sources of energy, reducing transport emissions and address emissions within the supply chain.

The most appropriate measures will depend on where the organisation’s emissions come from. Energy-saving opportunities might include better heating and cooling controls, more efficient lighting or equipment and reducing energy wasted outside operating hours. Transport emissions could be reduced through route optimisation, fewer unnecessary journeys or a transition towards lower-emission vehicles.

Businesses can also examine the carbon associated with purchased goods, materials, waste and suppliers, particularly where Scope 3 emissions represent a large proportion of the total footprint.

The first step should normally be to measure the existing carbon footprint. This provides a baseline and helps the organisation concentrate investment on areas where meaningful reductions can be achieved. Carbon credits may address residual emissions under some frameworks, but they do not replace reducing emissions within the organisation’s own footprint.
