Is there a cooling-off period for business energy contracts?

Usually not. Business energy contracts generally do not have the automatic cooling-off period that consumers may expect when buying some domestic products or services.

Ofgem states that there is no cooling-off period after a business energy contract has been agreed. This is particularly important because a contract can be formed over the phone or online and does not necessarily require a physical signature.

A supplier may choose to offer its own cancellation period or another contractual right to withdraw, but this should not be assumed. The business should check the specific terms before agreeing to the contract.

Before accepting an offer, confirm the contract length, start and end dates, unit rates, standing charges, termination conditions and any broker fees or commission included in the price. If a contract has already been agreed and you believe it was mis-sold or important information was withheld, raise a formal complaint with the supplier or broker rather than relying on a cooling-off right that may not exist.
