How do I get out of a business energy contract?

How you leave a business energy contract depends on the type of agreement you have and the terms you accepted when it was arranged.

If you are on a fixed-term contract, you will normally need to remain with the supplier until the contract ends unless the agreement contains an early termination clause or the supplier agrees to release you. An exit fee may apply. Fixed contracts also usually have a switching window before the end date, during which you can arrange your next contract or notify the supplier that you intend to leave.

Businesses on deemed, out-of-contract or some other variable arrangements can usually switch supplier without waiting for a fixed term to expire. However, an outstanding debt or another contractual issue may delay a switch.

Before taking any action, check the contract end date, notice requirements and termination terms. If you believe the contract was mis-sold or the terms were not properly explained, raise the issue with the supplier or broker rather than simply cancelling payments.
