To comply with ESOS, an organisation must first calculate its total energy consumption over a 12-month reference period. This includes relevant energy used by buildings, transport, industrial processes and other activities.
The organisation must then identify the areas that account for at least 95% of its total energy consumption and make sure these are covered by an appropriate ESOS compliance route. This may include ESOS energy audits, ISO 50001 certification, or a combination of the available routes.
The assessment must identify practical energy-saving opportunities and include the required energy intensity ratios. Where required, an approved ESOS Lead Assessor must review the assessment.
The organisation must prepare an ESOS report and keep an evidence pack containing the data, calculations and decisions used to support its compliance. The assessment must also receive the required director-level approval.
The organisation then submits its notification of compliance through the government’s MESOS service before the relevant compliance deadline.
After the compliance notification, qualifying organisations must also submit an Action Plan setting out the energy-saving measures they intend to implement. This is followed by annual Progress Updates reporting the measures completed and the estimated energy savings achieved.
